International Top Five - Mamma Mia Holds onto its High Note
September 24, 2008
No major openings didn't hurt Mamma Mia! too much as it remained on top of the international charts with $15.15 million on 4036 screens on 45 markets for a total of $334.87 million. This includes $2.4 million on 462 screens in France, but that was for the full week. Meanwhile in the U.K. it added $1.30 million on 443 screens for a total of $110.87 million after nearly three months of release, which is not that far off Titanic 's record of roughly $120 million.
Last week Tropic Thunder nearly fell out of the top thirty, but this week it shot into second place with $8.45 million on 1600 screens in 25 markets for a total of $29.52 million. Of this, $4.58 million was earned on 460 screens in the U.K., where it opened in first place. It also opened in first place in Germany with a more subdued $1.53 million on 347 screens.
WALL-E also saw growth as it opened in first place in Australia with $3.04 million on 419 screens over the weekend and $3.26 million in total. It also placed first in neighboring New Zealand with $411,000 on 93 screens. Overall the film made rose to third place with $6.74 million on 2659 screens in 33 markets for a total of $200.20 million. The film is not finished its international run yet, and still has openings in major markets like Germany, Italy, and Japan ahead of it. However, it is not doing as well as anticipated, nor as well as most previous Pixar films.
Gitler kaput! opened in first place its native Russia, and made debuts in two smaller markets. Overall it made $6.09 million on 773 screens in 3 markets, which was enough for fourth place internationally.
Hancock fell to fifth place with $5.72 million on 1515 screens in 18 markets for a total of $386.68 million. This includes a first place, $800,000 opening on 120 screens in Greece, and a sophomore haul in Italy of $3.50 million on 625 screens for a total of $13.60 million. That's it for new openings, and the film's decline this week was faster than anticipated, which makes $400 million internationally a little tricky.
