It's a terrible week for new DVD and Blu-ray releases with no first run releases of note. There's not even an abundance of limited releases, TV on DVD releases, or catalogue releases to pick up the slack. The best-selling release according to Amazon.com is 13 Assassins on Blu-ray and it is also arguably the best. It's really the only competitor for Pick of the Week.

A combination of terrible new releases and two massive store sales (including the Circuit City Going out of Business sale) meant this week's sales chart was dominated by some of the biggest hits from last year. Additionally, with openings in Italy, Brazil, China, Russia, and Japan still ahead, the film has a shot at $200 million worldwide. This week, new releases were practically non-existent on the DVD sales chart.
In fact, the best selling releases to make their debut on the chart were the late releases from last week. The best seller overall this week was The Dark Knight with 1.69 million units and $37.11 million in consumer retail spending for the week, giving it just a hair under 12.00 million units sold and $252.82 million in sales after three. Ten are for DVDs that arrived late, and one spotlight review is actually early. As for this week's releases, there are not that many that seem like must haves and none rise to the level of a DVD Pick of the Week. If I were to choose the best release found below, it's WALL-E, which came out last week. But even then I would chose the Blu-ray I reviewed last week over the DVD. Despite the lack of a top tier release, there were still more than enough that it was necessary to split the list into two parts. Part one can be found here.

The film had no major, or even midlevel openings, in fact, it's only market of note where it hasn't opened in yet is Japan, where it does make its nationwide debut at the end of August. However, it still did well in a number of markets cracking $1 million in Australia ($1.58 million on 365 screens), Russia ($1.50 million on 496), U.K. ($1.18 million on 388), and Spain ($1.08 million on 359). In fact, in the U.K. the film has earned $49.24 million after a month of release, which is even better than it managed domestically, if you take into account the relative size of the two markets.

It's six years since Men in Black 2, and twelve since Independence Day, but Will Smith has again shown that he has what it takes to fill movie theaters over the July 4th weekend.
The $66 million Friday-Sunday opening for Hancock tops all of Smith's previous holiday openings, and stands as his second-best opening weekend ever, behind December's I am Legend.
It's also the third-highest weekend for the July 4th holiday.
Spider-Man 2 remains top of that list with $88 million back in 2004, while last year's Transformers debut will most likely retain second place with $70.5 million.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl repeated on top of the per theater chart this week, pulling in close to $110,000 in 5 theaters for an average of $21,404. However, that was more than 50% less that its opening weekend average, which is a sharp drop-off for a limited release. The Last Mistress opened in second place with an average of $16,777 in two theaters. Two wide releases were neck-and-neck with Wanted earning an average of $16,040 and WALL-E right behind with $15,803.

June ended on a high at the box office with the combined ticket sales reaching $185 million. That's close to 30% more than last weekend and nearly 20% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 was able to extend its lead over 2007, but it is still above last year's pace by less than a percent, $4.52 billion to $4.49 billion. With almost nothing but good news recently, it's hard not to get optimistic about the state of the industry right now.

Moviegoers showed themselves to be a little more sophisticated than the pundits predicted over the weekend by crowning
WALL-E box office champion with a very healthy $62.5 million opening weekend, according to Disney's Sunday estimate.
That's a huge start for a supposedley hard-to-sell movie -- on par with the debut of Monsters, Inc. -- and likely to end up the third or fourth best opening in Pixar's history (see complete list of Pixar movies).
But that might not even be the biggest story of the weekend.

Strange week for movie sites as both wide releases could have won the weekly website award. However, of the seven limited releases, most didn't even have full sites. The best of the week was WALL-E - Official Site, while an honorable mention goes to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which released its teaser trailer this week.

June ends this weekend and so far there's only been one film not to match expectations, or at least come relatively close to doing so. That said, none of the films have had massive breakout success either. That should change this weekend as WALL-E is tracking well above initial expectations.

Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Bonneville on DVD and a copy of The Lather Effect on DVD.

June is filled with top picks, and practically only top picks. The best schedule for the overall health of the movie industry is only two wide releases, the potential blockbuster and the counter-programming release. This month that's exactly what happens; however, almost every week the counter-programming film has a serious shot at $100 million as well. If everything goes well, then we could have 8 films opening this month that crack 9 digits and that would put 2008 back on track. Even a more conservative estimate has four $100 million movies coming out this month, but there's a lot of uncertainty involved here. On the limited front, none of May's limited releases managed to breakout and expand wide, so there's still an opening for sleeper hit of the summer. That role could be filled by The Promotion, which appears to have the best shot at escaping the art hour circuit and reaching multiplexes.

We are starting to get full websites for some of the massive holiday season releases, which should mean there will be at least one award worthy website on each week's list. As for this week, there were a few that have potential assuming the sections marked coming soon live up to the rest of the site. But just one site, The Seeker: The Dark is Rising - Official Site, that was worthy of the Weekly Website Award.
