DVD Sales - In the Black
December 9, 2008
There were not many new releases to chart this week, but we did have a new number one as Hancock took top spot on the sales chart. That film sold 3.02 million units during its first week of release for a total of $61.23 million in consumer retail spending.
WALL-E was pushed into second place with a fantastic 2.43 million units for the week and 8.07 million units in total. With $141.93 million in sales after two weeks, it is now the second best-selling DVD of the year.
Kung Fu Panda crossed the $100 million mark with $112.90 million from 6.74 million units after three weeks of release.
This includes 1.17 million units / $18.21 million in sales this week.
Fred Claus opened in fourth place with 965,000 units and $17.44 million in sales.
Rounding out the top five was Tropic Thunder with 767,000 units / $15.24 million for the week for a total of 2.09 million units / $43.98 million.
The only other new release to chart was Space Chimps with 187,000 units / $3.85 million, which was only enough for 28th place.
It was Black Friday during this particular sales period, and unsurprisingly, Blu-ray had its best week ever, at least in terms of raw dollars.
There were $27.7 million in sales over the week, which was 50% more than the week before.
However, DVD sales more than doubled, leaving Blu-ray with just 6.7% of the overall sales.
On the Top 20 comparison, Blu-ray grabbed 10%, which suggests while Blu-ray sales were driven by the top, DVD revenue was driven by sales through the format's massive catalogue.
