Holdovers Hold On

There were three films in the $10,000 club this weekend, all of them holdovers. Last week's winner, Broken Flowers, again finished first despite a sizeable increase in its theatre count. It more than quadrupled its theatre count but lost less than half its per theatre average to land at $14,553. 2046 saw a smaller increase in theatres but didn't hold up as well as the previous film, falling to $13,144, which is still an excellent result. Lastly, The Aristocrats exploded from just 9 theatres to 86 but was still able to make the list with $10,083.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theatre Charts alumni:

  • On paper Murderball looked like a sure win: it has an inspirational story, nearly perfect reviews, and a heated rivalry as well. But it appears the disabilities aspect is keeping people away; this is understandable since the subject matter would make many people uncomfortable. Understandable, but unfortunate. Even so, it did reach $1 million early in the weekend, which is a good box office for a documentary and it might have enough stamina to reach $2 million.
  • The Aristocrats also hit $1 million over the weekend, and is already halfway to $2 million.
  • Since Broken Flowers earned more than $1 million over the weekend it's obvious that it was able to reach at least one milestone since last week. It passed $1 million midweek, over the weekend it made it to $2 million and by Monday it had made $3 million.
  • Me and You and Everyone We Know has peaked, both at the box office and with its theatre count, but that didn't stop it from beating $3 million early in the weekend.
  • And it wouldn't be the same without March of the Penguins reaching a milestone or two. During the midweek the unstoppable documentary reached $30 million and over the weekend $35 million fell. Simply amazing.
