Weekend projections: Twisters hits blockbuster territory with $80-million opening

Resurrecting old intellectual property doesn’t always pay off for studios, as The Fall Guy showed in early May, and there’s an argument that Twisters couldn’t add much to what Twister had to say back in 1996. Audiences aren’t seeing it that way this weekend, as Twisters will pile up a shade over $80 million, according to Universal’s Sunday-morning projection. Weekend predictions: Twisters should spin up $60 million or more on opening weekend

Twisters looks set to add more momentum to the Summer season this weekend, with $2 million from special screenings on Wednesday, $8.7 million from previews on Thursday, and reportedly excellent business already on Friday. Based on the official info we have so far, it looks as though it should earn more than $60 million this weekend, which is an excellent result for a movie that’s arriving more than 28 years after the previous installment in the franchise. Despicable Me 4 will continue at the top of the box office chart this weekend, with a very respectable 40% decline in its second weekend. With another $44.65 million expected to land in the bank between Friday and Sunday, the animated comedy will finish the weekend with $211 million domestically. It’s cruising past $400 million worldwide (Universal pegs its tally at $437.8 million), and the franchise now has over $5 billion in theaters worldwide—the first animated series to hit that mark.
