Theater counts: Despicable Me 4 looks to kick off Fourth of July with a bang
July 3, 2024
As the summer heats up, two animated features seek to dominate the box office leading into the Fourth of July weekend. The newest entrant is the highly anticipated sequel from the beloved Despicable Me franchise, Despicable Me 4. This latest installment bursts onto screens in a staggering 4,428 theaters, aiming to dethrone the current box office champion after a three-week reign.
It has indeed been a remarkable three-week run for Inside Out 2, which has soared to over $1 billion in global box office receipts. Domestically, it has pulled in an impressive $489 million, with international markets contributing a substantial $584 million. Despite facing competition from the new Despicable Me 4, fans of the sequel will find plenty of opportunities to catch it in theaters, as it continues to play in 3,760 locations throughout North America.
Despicable Me 4 follows Gru, the supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League-agent, who returns for a new era of Minions mayhem, alongside his wife and fellow Anti-Villain League agent Lucy, their three adopted girls—Margo, Edith, and Agnes—and the newest member of the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Steve Carell returns as Gru, while Will Ferrell, Sofia Vergara, and Kristen Wiig lend their voices to the animated comedy. The film, which officially opened yesterday in North America, has earned over $25 million from 17 international markets, from rollouts that began on June 20. The movie is currently available on both large premium screens and IMAX locations.
This holiday weekend brings three additional wide releases alongside the animated juggernauts. Today marks the debut of Kill, a Hindi-language action-thriller opening in 827 locations across the U.S. and Canada. Also premiering is Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot from Angel Studios, set to hit 2,200 venues. Meanwhile, horror enthusiasts can look forward to MaXXXine, which is slated for release on Friday.
Notably, Kinds of Kindness is expanding its theatrical footprint significantly, adding 430 locations this weekend, bringing its total to 920 theaters. This marks a substantial increase from its previous 490 theaters, showcasing its growing presence among moviegoers.
