Weekend Estimates: One Last Furious Weekend
April 26, 2015
Furious 7 will once more hold on to the title of top movie at the box office this weekend, becoming the first film since Guardians of the Galaxy to do so for four weekends, and the first since The Hunger Games to be number one for four straight weeks. Furious 7 will also become this weekend only the third title, after Avatar and Titanic, to hit $1 billion in international box office earnings. Universal is estimating an international total of $1.001 billion, including $323 million in China—an all-time record for that territory.
This weekend’s wide openers are fairing less well. The Age of Adaline will debut with a solid $13.375 million for Lionsgate, with a middling theater average of $4,472. Russell Crowe’s directorial debut, The Water Diviner, will pick up $1.25 million from 320 theaters (including some IMAX venues) for an average a shade under $4,000. Open Road’s Little Boy is set to post a disappointing $2.83 million from 1,045 locations, a reminder that faith-based films aren’t guaranteed box office draws.
Ex Machina expanded into 1,255 theaters this weekend and will also earn around $4,000 per theater. It will pick up about $5.4 million for a total just shy of $7 million after three weekends. That makes it A24’s second-most successful film ever, after Spring Breakers, and the $14 million earned by Spring Breakers is probably a good upper bound for expectations for this movie.
In limited release, only one film, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck looks like it will break $10,000 per theater. We haven’t received an official estimate for the film, but rumors are that it earned about $150,000 from three venues.
