Theater counts: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 blasts into 4,450 theaters
May 4, 2023
All good things must come to an end, as is the case with The Super Mario Bros. Movie sitting atop the widest release list, but more importantly at the box office. Since its debut on April 7, Mario and friends have collected just short of a half billion dollars domestically, while enjoying a worldwide total of over $1 billion. There is still ample opportunity however to see Super Mario on the big screen as the film is still widely available in 3,909 cinemas. This week attention turns to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 though, as it becomes the widest release, starting in 4,450 locations.
Director James Gunn is once again behind the camera, directing the third and final installment of the superhero franchise (and 32nd in the MCU) as Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt, rallies his guardians to defend the universe and one of their own. Co-starring alongside Pratt, a bevy of stars return from the previous films including Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel and more. The $250 million-budgeted film looks to add to the $1,640-million worldwide total amassed by its two predecessors. Guardians will be released worldwide in 600 unique versions and will be available on both traditional and IMAX formats.
One other wide release is making its arrival into theaters this week as Love Again launches in 2,703 movie houses. The romantic comedy-drama stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas as a grieving woman who unintentionally sends text messages to her fiancé’s phone, which has since been assigned to another man. Co-starring with Chopra Jonas is Sam Heughan, with Celine Dion portraying a fictionalized version of herself.
Rounding out the top five this week are last week’s newcomers in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, and Big George Foreman, both retaining their opening counts of 3,343 and 3,054 respectively. Lastly, last week’s second-place finisher at the box office, Evil Dead Rise, drops from 3,417 to 3,036 venues and finds itself as the fifth-widest release of the week.
Looking ahead to next week we see the theatrical launches of five wide releases including Book Club: The Next Chapter in about 3,000 locations, as well as Knights of the Zodiac in 750 theaters. Other films set to open wide are Fool’s Paradise, Hypnotic, and Rally Road Racers.
