Theater counts: Thunderbolts* strikes in 4,330 theaters
May 1, 2025
The weekend box office saw another win for Sinners as the film crossed the $100 million mark on Saturday, finishing its second weekend with $45.71 million for a total of $123.24 million. With a mere 6% decline from its opening weekend, the Michael B. Jordan film found itself third on the all-time list of smallest declining films, just behind Shrek and Avatar, respectively. The film will fall out of first place, however, this weekend as newcomer Thunderbolts* makes its way into theaters.
As the final film in phase five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thunderbolts* follows an unconventional team of antiheroes on a dangerous mission that forces them to confront the darkest corners of their past. Starting out in 4,330 cinemas, including Real D, 3D, and IMAX screens, the film contains an impressive lead ensemble cast which includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, and Lewis Pullman, among others. The location count marks the widest opening since Beetlejuice Beetlejuice made its debut in 4,575 theaters back in early September. The Jake Schreier-directed feature looks to add considerably to the massive MCU franchise total of over $31 billion from worldwide showings.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is the psychological thriller The Surfer. The movie stars Nicolas Cage as a man whose desire to surf with his son is thwarted and tormented by a rowdy group of locals. Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that escalates with the punishing summer heat and pushes him to his breaking point. The movie can be seen in 884 movie houses throughout North America.
Lastly, making its cinematic debut in 794 locations is the latest from Mucho Mas Media with the release of the horror feature, Rosario. The film charts a young woman who must make it through the night as mythological demons begin to attack her while she watches over her grandmother’s fresh corpse.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is The Accountant 2, looking to add to its six-day total of $30.45 million, holding steady with its opening count of 3,610 venues. Occupying the third and fourth place spots are the successful Warner Bros.’ duo with A Minecraft Movie and Sinners showing in 3,571 and 3,347 theaters, respectively. Lastly, Until Dawn keeps its first weekend location count of 3,055 movie houses as it heads into its second weekend at the domestic box office.
Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the launch of four new wide releases. These include the slasher pic, Clown in a Cornfield, the medieval set romance, Juliet & Romeo; action feature, Shadow Force, and Vertical Entertainment’s action-comedy, Fight or Flight, starring Josh Hartnett. The latter is projected to begin its run in approximately 1,600 locations.
