Theater counts: Lilo & Stitch hold on as widest release for yet another week
June 5, 2025
Lilo & Stitch once again dominated the weekend box office by grabbing just short of $62 million in its second go-around, catapulting its total to an impressive $279 million. After fending off both Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning and newcomer Karate Kid: Legends last weekend, the film will face a much stiffer test this weekend as From the World of John Wick: Ballerina makes its way into theaters.
Ballerina stars Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a ballerina-assassin who begins to train in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma and sets out to exact revenge for her father’s death. The film’s impressive ensemble line-up includes Angelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, and, since this is part of the John Wick franchise, the movie wouldn’t be complete without Keanu Reeves. The film directed by Len Wiseman will begin its theatrical run in 3,409 cinemas throughout North America.
Also making its debut this weekend is the Australian survival-horror movie, Dangerous Animals. Available in 1,636 movie houses, the film follows a rebellious surfer who is abducted by a shark-obsessed serial killer and held captive on his boat. The surfer must figure out how to escape before he carries out a ritualistic feeding to the sharks below. The film stars Hassie Harrison in the lead role as “Zephyr”.
Two other films will be making their theatrical starts this week in the way of the animated feature, Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye, and The Ritual. The former is set to open in 1,080 theaters. We will update the latter when they become available.
Expanding from six locations in its debut last weekend to 1,678 theaters this weekend is the Wes Anderson-directed espionage film, The Phoenician Scheme. The feature, which also contains a who’s who of Hollywood talent, made over $700,000 in its first six days and hopes to add significantly from its bumped-up theater count.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned current leader, Lilo & Stitch, dropping 225 locations this weekend but still holding strong in 4,185 theaters. Karate Kid: Legends adds 50 cinemas in its second weekend for a total of 3,859 theaters. Occupying the third-place spot is the current number two film at the box office, with Final Reckoning losing 365 theaters this weekend but still showing in a solid 3,496 locations. Lastly, former box office champion Final Destination: Bloodlines drops below 3,000 locations this weekend, landing in 2,868 theaters as it enters its fourth weekend.
Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the big-screen arrival of How to Train Your Dragon. The live-action remake of the 2010 animated feature is projected to make its cinematic debut in approximately 4,000 theaters, including IMAX screens where available.
