Theater counts: Transformers wins the battle of the robots to become widest release

September 26th, 2024

Transformers: One

After a three-week reign as North America’s widest release, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has finally dropped below 4,000 theaters, making room for last weekend’s newcomer, Transformers One, to edge into the top spot as widest release this weekend. It will barely surpass another debut, The Wild Robot, by just eight locations. This weekend, audiences can look forward to a variety of new wide releases. More...

Theater counts: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice set to open in a massive 4,575 theaters

September 5th, 2024

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

It was another weekend of box office glory for Deadpool & Wolverine, as the film once again claimed the top spot on the domestic charts by earning $15.5 million, taking its 38-day North American total to $599.8 million, and has since crossed the $600 million threshold, currently enjoying a domestic total of $606 million. This weekend, two new wide releases make their way into North American cinemas, with one poised to knock the dynamic duo from their perch once and for all.

While Deadpool & Wolverine has been in the spotlight for the majority of its run, it is time to shine some light, and box office, on this weekend’s most anticipated release, Beetlejuice-Beetlejuice. The long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuice debuts in 4,575 theaters this weekend, tying Toy Story 4 as the seventh-widest release of all time. 36 years after the original film, the dark fantasy-comedy brings back Michael Keaton as the titular character while featuring an array of Hollywood talent, including Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Willem Dafoe among others. Home Market Releases for November 1st, 2016

November 2nd, 2016

Star Trek Beyond

The Home Market Release Report is a day late this week for a trio of reasons. Firstly, the November Preview was also due the same day. Secondly, it was a very busy week. And finally, I’m suffering from a medical condition a lot of Canadians suffer from this time of year... acute Coffee Crisp poisoning. I’m not saying I ate four dozen fun-sized Coffee Crisps in the past three days... I’m not saying that, because it was actually an even 50. Don’t judge me. ... Okay, judge me. Clearly mistakes were made. It is a busy week, but not very deep week. Star Trek Beyond is by far the biggest and best release of the week and the various home market releases are the pick of the week. There wasn’t a lot of competition for that title, but Bad Moms is also worth picking up. More...

Featured TV on DVD Review: Modern Family: Season Seven

September 19th, 2016

Modern Family: Season 7

The seventh season of Modern Family had the lowest ratings since the first season. It was also the worst season in terms of major awards. Has the show jumped the shark? Or is it still a great sitcom, even if it is no longer the best sitcom on TV? More...

Limited Releases: Grace Under Pressure

October 4th, 2013

There are ten limited releases on this week's list, but only one of them is earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Let the Fire Burn is the standout, with a 92% positive response. The Summit is earning 73% positive reviews, which is good, but not great. Then there's Grace Unplugged, which is opening in more than 500 theaters, but with no reviews. That's a horrible combination. Overall, there's nothing that jumps out as a potential limited release hit. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Frankenweenie

February 24th, 2013

Tim Burton is one of the most stylish directors around and while admittedly he sometimes lets the style get ahead of the story, he has still made many, many wonderful movies over the years. His latest is also one of his first. Way back in 1984, he made a short film called Frankenweenie. Last year, he remade the short as a feature-length stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie. The film struggled to find an audience, but was that because it didn't deserve an audience? Or has Tim Burton burned up too much of the good-will he generated earlier in his career. More...
