This week’s list includes a number of releases that are worth picking up, mostly of the smaller variety. There’s a foreign-language import, Border; a mostly forgotten comedy from the 1980s, Used Cars; a good movie that is busted Oscar-bait, Mary Queen of Scots; and an Anime slice of life, Love Live! Sunshine!!: Season Two. However, for most people, it’s the two biggest releases that are also the best: The Little Mermaid and Ralph Breaks the Internet. For me, Ralph Breaks the Internet on Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD is the clear Pick of the Week.

Lady and the Tramp first hit theaters in 1955 and over the years it has earned nearly $100 million at the box office. It has also been released numerous times on the home market, including multiple times on Blu-ray. The newest edition, The Signature Collection Blu-ray Combo Pack, comes out on the 27th of February. However, the screener arrived early and I have nothing else to review this week, so I thought I would get to it early. (It also comes out on Video on Demand this Tuesday).

I previously reviewed Bambi when it first came out on Blu-ray in 2011. The film is an animated classic and was absolutely worth picking up then. However, are there enough new extras on the Anniversary Edition to be worth the upgrade? Or is it strictly for those who missed out the first time?

I previously reviewed Pinocchio almost eight years ago and called it an absolute classic and named it Pick of the Week. My opinion on the movie hasn’t changed, but is this version worth upgrading to? Or is it more for people who hadn’t purchased a Blu-ray player back in 2009?

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a movie I swear I've reviewed. Maybe I've reviewed so many Disney classics that I can no longer remember which ones I've reviewed and which ones I haven't. This film is absolutely a classic in both senses of the word. It is the first feature-length cell-animated film, first hitting theaters nearly 80 years ago. Additionally, it is widely considered one of the best feature-length animated films of all times. However, part of that is due to nostalgia and how ground-breaking it was. If you ignore the age and the technological marvel it was at the time, does it still live up? Or has it aged poorly.

This week's home market releases are insane, so I'm going to have to be a lot more judicious in pruning the list. If I were to include all releases that are big enough to include, if they were released during a slow week, there would be more than 100 releases on this week's list (including secondary Blu-rays, but not VOD releases). I have to pare that back to a more reasonable number. Why are there so many releases? Firstly, it is the beginning of the Christmas Shopping season and we have two monster hits on this week's list. Secondly, it is the last week before the fall season begins in earnest, so it is the last week for a lot of shows to come out on DVD before they are running into competition from the new season. It should come as no surprise that the best releases on this week's list are in the TV on DVD categories, including Marvel's Agent Carter: Season 1 and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 2. Both of which are co-winners of the Pick of the Week.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad and Fun and Fancy Free were two theatrical releases released during the lowest point in Disney's history, at least financially. The company was very close to bankruptcy. They didn't have the resources to produce feature-length movies, so they packaged shorts to be shown instead. This Blu-ray combo pack includes two theatrical releases, plus a bonus film, for a total of five films. These start with...

The Jungle Book was the last movie Walt Disney worked on before his death in 1966, although it wasn't released till 1967. The last time it came out on DVD was seven years ago, but this week it makes it debut on Blu-ray. How does the film look and sound on high definition? And how are the extras?

December 1st, 2013
We had some good news and some bad news in November. The bad news is the overall weakness at the box office continued and 2013 lost its lead over 2012. Strong runs by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen did help it bounce back in the end, but 2013 is still going to have a tough time topping 2012. Looking forward to December, we find about a dozen wide releases, sort of. There are several films that are opening in limited release that are expected to expand wide by the end of the month, but I'm not sure that will be the case for all of them. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug should be the easy winner this month and if it is a little lucky, it might even top its predecessor at the box office. There is a huge amount of hype surrounding Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and it could double the first film's box office numbers. On the other hand, those two films might be the only two December wide releases to reach $100 million. There are a few that have the potential to get to the century mark, if they are big players during Awards Season. Obviously some of the films coming out this month will win awards, but there's already a lot of competition in theaters before the month begins. There were three $100 million movies last December, led by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, so while it could be close, it looks like December will lose in the year-over-year comparison. This is really bad news, as 2013 can't afford to go out on a losing streak if it wants to top 2012.
