This felt like a slow week to me, but looking at the list there were 15 spotlight reviews, which is a huge amount for one week. There are a large number of DVDs worth checking out, but looking at the top of the list, I think Christopher Titus - Love is Evol is the best DVD coming out this week, and the winner of the DVD Pick of the Week. As has happened pretty much every week this year, there are so many DVDs on this week's list that is had to be split into two. The second part can be found here.

It's the week of the special edition, with roughly 409 such releases on the list (410 if you count the concurrent releases for X-Men: The Last Stand). Of these, most are completely skippable, but a few are actually worth the upgrade. When it comes to digging through the clutter and finding the best of the best there were a few contenders including the blockbusters X-Men: The Last Stand - Collector's Edition, but the likelihood of a bigger special edition coming out sooner than later prevented it from winning. Thank You for Smoking - Buy from Amazon was also highly rated, but in the end I went with Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection - Volume 2. Meanwhile, for fellow Canadians, it is your patriotic duty to pick up Corner Gas - Season 3 tomorrow.

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. It was another slow week as not one new release made it on
Amazon's Top Ten Sales Chart. There are a couple of good DVDs, but they are special editions of older DVDs. That kept my 'To buy list' to just two:
The Commitments and
Married... with Children - Second Season - (
Buy from Amazon.)

The Battle of Algiers with $9,143. The best new limited release,
Lost Boys of Sudan, finished in second place with $7,485. In the mean time, the best wide release was way down the list in 16th place. That film,
Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen could only manage an average of $3,736.

Not one movie made it to the $10,000 per theatre average, although a few came close. The debut of Along Came Polly came in first with $9,290 per theatre, while the second weekend for The Battle of Algiers was just behind with $9,240 per theatre. Perhaps the best performance was by Girl with a Pearl Earring, which saw an increase in both theatre count and per theatre average.
