There are two wide releases coming out next week, Aloha and San Andreas. The former will likely earn better reviews, but the latter will likely open faster. Because of this, it is the target film in this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for San Andreas.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a Frankenprize. Because San Andreas is a disaster movie, I was going to find another disaster film to feature as part of the prize pack and I found Airplane! Don't Call Me Shirley Edition on DVD, which is the greatest disaster movie ever made. I also own it on Blu-ray, so the DVD is up for grabs. The winner will also get another previously reviewed DVD.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win two previously reviewed DVDs and / or Blu-rays.
Finally, we will be choosing an entrant from the group of people who haven't won, or haven't won recently, and they will also win two previously reviewed DVDs and / or Blu-rays.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

This week is again dominated with TV on DVD releases, including more than half the first page on Amazon.com's list of best-selling new releases. There is one first-run release that is doing really well: Snow White and the Huntsman - Extended Edition on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack. It's worth picking up, but not Pick of the Week material. To find contenders for that title, one must look to the TV on DVD releases, including 30 Rock: Season Six and Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials. But the winner was Castle: Season Four.

It's not a particularly strong week on the home market. The biggest first run release coming out this week is Horrible Bosses, which was a surprise $100 million hit. Green Lantern will likely be the best selling release of the week, but it disappointed with critics and at the box office. As far as the best of the best goes, The Tree of Life Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack is the best bet as far as Pick of the Week goes, bu there are a few others that are worth picking up. There are also a couple of late arrivals that deserve honorable mentions this week: Castle: Season Three and Dumbo - Blu-ray Combo Pack.

At the end of September, a trio of comedies from the 1980s were released on Blu-ray for the first time: Airplane, The Naked Gun, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. At the moment, they are exclusive to Best Buy in the States and Future Shop up here in Canada. But are they worth going out of your way to grab?
