It’s looking like another close-run race for top spot at the box office this weekend, although whichever film wins will have the dubious distinction of have the second-lowest earnings of a number one film this year (assuming they top Novocaine’s $8.8-million debut back on the weekend of March 14. The Labor Day holiday on Monday doesn’t usually give movies a big boost at the box office, so this will be a fairly straight-up head-to-head battle between Weapons and Caught Stealing.

The KPop Demon Hunters Sing-Along Event is selling out movie theaters across the country, and could deliver Netflix a top place on the box office chart this weekend, with Weapons its only real competition. Whether Netflix will report box office numbers is another matter. Nobody 2 should make a decent start this weekend, with an opening close to double that of the first Nobody film back in pandemic-ravaged March 2021. Weapons won’t be significantly challenged for first place on the box office chart, but this weekend will be an important pointer towards its long-term performance.

Weapons and Freakier Friday have both posted good numbers from last night’s preview shows, with Weapons the clear leader between the two with an impressive $5.7 million (the best for an original horror movie since Nope). Freakier Friday’s $3.1 million is nearly double the amount The Naked Gun pulled in from its previews last weekend.
