Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales - Escape Greater

February 24th, 2009

There were four or five new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's sales chart depending on how you count Madagascar 2 - Escape to Africa. During its first full week of release it sold 1.83 million units, giving it totals of 3.51 million units and $56.55 million, which is easily the best sales figures for any DVD this year. More...

DVD Sales - No Escape for Competition

February 23rd, 2009

There were a huge number of new releases this week, and they occupied the top four spots on this week's sales chart. The new number one was Madagascar 2 - Escape to Africa, which was released later in the week than the rest of the releases. Over the weekend it sold 1.68 million units and $27.10 million, plus an additional 89,000 units and $2.76 million from the two-pack. More...

DVD Rentals - Lake has Lingering View on top of Rental Chart

February 23rd, 2009

Lakeview Terrace repeated on top of the rental chart this week, despite there being four new releases trying to cram into the top five. This week it was a close race as it earned just over 10% more than the second place Madagascar 2 - Escape to Africa. More...

DVD Releases for February 3, 2009 - Part III

February 3rd, 2009

Wow. That was... Due to technical difficulties, late deliveries, and some misfiled DVDs, this week's list is a little later than normal (but it's still Tuesday, so it's not technically late). It is also a lot larger than normal with a record number of Spotlight reviews (23 in all, or 30 if you count individual movies). There are also some very high quality releases including Zack and Miri Make a Porno on either DVD or Blu-ray. However, given the subject matter of that film, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. The best release of the week is, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist on DVD or Blu-ray, but especially Blu-ray, which is worth the upgrade. That film is the DVD Pick of the Week. With a record number of spotlight reviews, it goes without saying that the list had to be split up this week, with the first part found here, while the second part can be found here. (First time I had to separate the list into three parts.) More...

The only opening of note this weekend came in Russia, however, the film struggled there placing sixth with $353,000 on 128 screens. Box Office Goes Wild

November 11th, 2008

After Halloween basically cut last weekend by a third, this weekend bounced back, and did it with a vengeance. Not only did the number one film beat expectations, the overall box office did as well. Total tickets sales were $142 million, a stunning 62% more than last weekend, which is impressive, even after taking into account Halloween falling on a Friday last weekend and the beginning of November this weekend. Even more importantly, this weekend was 26% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 has earned $7.96 billion, which is higher than 2007's pace, but by less than 1% as last year at this time the running tally was $7.94 billion. More...

Holiday Season Starts

November 6th, 2008

The winter holiday season used to start on Thanksgiving long weekend, but now it starts the first weekend of November. And this year it starts with a sequel that has great expectations associated with it. Some good news, this weekend last year was weaker than expected and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa should have no trouble earning more than all three wide releases from last year combined. In fact, it should earn more than the two top films from last year did. More...

High School Repeats a Grade

November 4th, 2008

With Halloween falling on a Friday, the box office practically lost one day out of three over the weekend, which explains why the overall box office was down 34% to $87 million. Coincidentally, the box office was down a nearly identical 35% from the same weekend last year. However, not only did Halloween cut into the box office, this time last year was the beginning of November, which is historically a much more lucrative month at the box office, and both of these are mitigating factors. Year-to-date, 2008 has brought in just under $7.79 billion, compared to 2007, which earned just over $7.79 billion during the same time period. More...

Weekend Estimates: High School Musical Remains at Number One

November 2nd, 2008

High School Musical 3 recovered from a very poor performance on Friday evening to win the weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning. The teen musical picked up another $15 million, which, while down 64% from its opening, can be considered a very healthy result given that it had to contend with both a huge opening weekend and Halloween on Friday. Zack and Miri Make a Porno finished second with an estimated $10.7 million -- director Kevin Smith's second best opening weekend ever. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of October 31, 2008

November 1st, 2008

Bad week for websites with four films that did not have one, and another movie's site consisted of nothing but the trailer. That said, there was one site, Zack and Miri Make a Porno's Official Site, that was worthy of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Can Halloween Scare Up Some Business?

October 30th, 2008

It's Halloween tomorrow, and let me tell you something, Halloween sucks when you are on a diet. However, this year I get to share my pain, as the only thing worse than Halloween without Tootsie Rolls, is Halloween at the box office. With so many kids out trick or treating, they won't be heading to the movie theaters. Neither will their parents, or people who want to stay at home and hand out candy, or those who just want to avoid dealing with all of the pedestrian traffic. It is such a headache that the last time Halloween fell on a Friday, which was 2003, no movies opened wide that day. (Although Brother Bear expanded wide the next day.) This time around we have two movies opening wide (Zack and Miri Make a Porno and The Haunting of Molly Hartley) and two films are expanding wide (RocknRolla and Changeling). Perhaps these risky moves will pay off. However, there is almost no chance it will keep up with last year's pace, since this time last year was the beginning of November instead of the end of October. More...

Contest - So Goes the Nation

October 24th, 2008

Next week the widest release of the week is Zack and Miri Make a Porno, but despite our intense interest in that movie, it is not the most interesting race going on. The most interesting race is between John McCain and Barack Obama, and it is this race that is the target of this week's poorly named Box Office Prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict how many electoral college votes are won by each candidate in the United States presidential election that happens on November 4th, 2008. You need to give your prediction for the number of electoral college votes won by John McCain and Barack Obama, as reported by CNN.com at noon on Wednesday, November 5th, 2008. Note that if one or more states have not been called by CNN by noon on Wednesday, they will not be included on either candidate's electoral college total for the purposes of the contest, even though they will eventually be awarded one way or another. We expect a lot of entries, and a tie at the top, so the tie breaker will go to the person who can come the closest to correctly predicting the total popular vote for whichever candidate is leading in the popular vote, without going over, again as report by CNN.com at noon on Wednesday, November 5th, 2008. Whoever comes out on top will win ...So Goes the Nation on DVD, as well as some non-political movies: Pathology on DVD, The Happening on DVD, and Joy Ride 2 - Dead Ahead on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Monday, November 3, to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2008 Preview: October

October 1st, 2008

September ends, and for that we are all very grateful. However, while we are entering the final push for 2008 at the box office, things don't look too rosy for the upcoming month. First of all, there are way too many films opening, including eight that are opening or expanding on the first weekend. Of those two, maybe three will thrive. Most will sink without being noticed, which could negatively affect the overall box office going forward. On the other hand, there are a few films opening this month that could be players come Awards Season, which is just around the corner. Perhaps this will help a few mid-level hits rise above the crowd. More...

International Details - School Climbing Higher

November 23rd, 2008

High School Musical 3: Senior Year fell below $10 million this past weekend, but we still able to remain in second place internationally earning $8.65 million on 4642 screens in 34 markets for a total of $123.01 million internationally and $207.178 million worldwide. The only opening of note this weekend came in Russia, however, the film struggled there placing sixth with $353,000 on 128 screens. Its best market was the U.K. where it added $1.46 million on 483 screens over the weekend for a total of $31.76 million. More...
