Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: Creed III fends off a trio of new wide releases to stay on top

March 9th, 2023

Creed III

Boxing drama Creed III opened last weekend and delivered a knockout at the box office, scoring an impressive $58.37 million, not only making it the franchise’s top opening weekend, but the top opening weekend in history for a sports-themed movie, narrowly topping 2010’s The Karate Kid. Despite having its hands full with three new wide releases making their theatrical debuts, the film keeps its opening theater count of 4,007 cinemas heading into its second week, once again making it the widest release of the week. 2023 market forecast: additions to the release schedule increase annual box office prediction to $9 billion

February 28th, 2023

Fast X

Some additions to the release schedule over the past few weeks have helped boost our model’s prediction for the overall domestic box office for 2023 up by a couple of hundred million dollars since our last update, to $9 billion. We’re now expecting 102 wide releases, up six from the announced list at the end of January, and up four from what we had assumed in our model. While the added releases aren’t in the blockbuster category—the model’s highest prediction for a new addition is a modest $40 million—they all have the potential to become mid-level hits, and they are spread throughout the year, which is exactly what theater owners need.

Theater counts: Quantumania repeats as widest release and two newcomers arrive

February 23rd, 2023

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

It’s likely no big surprise to see last week’s juggernaut release retain its spot as the widest release this week. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania debuted in 4,345 locations and went on to collect an impressive $106 million in its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day domestic total of $131.33 million. The latest Marvel feature retains its opening theater count, once again making it the only film currently playing in over 4,000 movie houses. More...

Weekend predictions: Quantumania looks to top $100 million on debut

February 17th, 2023

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

The Ant-Man sub-franchise has always been one of the quieter corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the first Ant-Man film opening with $57.2 million back in 2015, and Ant-Man and the Wasp debuting to $75.8 million in 2018. With that track record, and the post-pandemic market, an opening over $60 million should be considered a success for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It’s been tracking ahead of that number for a while though, and its Thursday previews suggest it will top $100 million this weekend—a welcome boost for a market that’s been waiting quite a while for a major release. Theater counts: Quantumania opens in an ultra-wide 4,345 theaters

February 16th, 2023

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

The wait is over for fans of Ant-Man as the follow-up has finally made its way into theaters—4,345 of them to be exact. That makes it the 40th-widest release of all time, placing itself firmly in between two other franchise sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Its forerunners, Ant-Man, and Ant-Man and the Wasp started out in 3,856 and 4,206 theaters respectively. The third and latest installment of the franchise brings back Paul Rudd as the titular character, while containing a bevy of big name talent including Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, and Bill Murray, among others. Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Captain Marvel

June 25th, 2019

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel started with two strikes against it, because it’s an origin story and a prequel. There have been so many origin stories for super heroes released over the past decade plus that audiences have grown tired of them. Furthermore, prequels are difficult to do right, because it’s much harder to surprise audiences. Can this film overcome these obstacles? Or should fans of the M.C.U. just wait till the sequel comes out when this character can really shine? More...

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Ant-Man and the Wasp

October 15th, 2018

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man and the Wasp is the second film in the Ant-Man franchise and the 20th film in the MCU. I liked the first film more than the average critic, because I’m a huge fan of heist movies. This film won’t have the same heist angle, so will it not work with me as much? More...
