Theater counts: Wonka remains widest release in a quiet start to 2024

January 4th, 2024

Wonka

After three weeks in North American cinemas, Wonka once again leads the pack as widest release, as it has done since its debut on December 15th. The Willy Wonka origin story has gobbled up over $147 million in domestic earnings in its first 20 days, while bringing in just above $253 million from international markets, catapulting its global take to over $400 million. The film does drop below 4,000 locations this week for the first time, but will still be available in 3,817 theaters, which easily holds off newcomer Night Swim’s starting count of 3,250 cinemas. Limited Releases: Whipped into Shape

October 10th, 2014

Whiplash poster

We have a rather long list of limited releases this week, but sadly only three of them are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Unfortunately, two of these films will likely not do well in theaters. Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead is a horror film, which is one strike against it, while it is also playing on Video on Demand. I Am Ali is a documentary, so it could do well in art house circuits, but its chances of expanding significantly are very limited. Finally there's Whiplash, which could lead the way on the Per Theater Chart. More...

Featured DVD Review: Scarecrow

February 19th, 2014

Scarecrow is a TV movie that debuted last year on SyFy channel. Time to lower expectations. It is directed by Sheldon Wilson, who previously directed Mothman, which was better than expected for most of its running time. Will this be one of SyFy's pleasant surprises? Should I have lowered my expectations even more? Or is it so bad it's entertainingly bad? More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Slightly Single in L.A.

September 3rd, 2013

Slightly Single in L.A. began filming in November of 2009, but it is only now getting a Direct-to-DVD release. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic doesn't even have a page for the film. That's a lot of bad signs. Does it deserve to be known by more people? Or would it have faded away, even if it had more buzz surrounding it? More...

Featured TV on DVD Review: Doc McStuffins: Time for Your Checkup

May 12th, 2013

Disney Junior is the rebranded version of Playhouse Disney Channel that launched as a full channel in 2011. Earlier this year they overtook Nick, Jr.'s ratings, Nick, Jr. being the longtime ruler of preschool TV. This is thanks in part to hits like Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins. The latest Doc McStuffins to arrive is Time for Your Checkup, which features five episodes or ten shorts, starting with... More...
