Disney’s strategy of converting its theme park rides into adventure movies is hitting pay dirt again this weekend with Jungle Cruise on its way to a $34.2-million debut, according to the studio’s Sunday morning projection. That’s substantially above our model’s prediction, and it’s not the only movie to be earning more than expected: The Green Knight will earn about $6.8 million this weekend to land in second place. Weekend estimates: Old leads on lackluster weekend

Night Shyamalan returns to the top of the box office charts this weekend, but he might be the only person celebrating as every opening and returning film in the top 10 looks set to underperform this weekend. Shyamalan’s new film, Old is coming closest to our model’s prediction with an opening of $16.5 million, which is 12% below what the model expected. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will come second with $13.35 million, which is 15% behind expectations. Weekend estimates: A Quiet Place sets new 2021 benchmark with 3-day $48.38 million

A Quiet Place: Part II is headed for a Memorial Day opening of close to $60 million, according to Paramount’s Sunday morning projections. The horror sequel is expected to pick up $48.38 million over three days, and $58 million over four, making it the biggest hit at the box office since theaters started reopening, handily beating Godzilla vs. Kong, which debuted with $32.2 million back in April. Cruella is well behind it in second place, but will top Tom and Jerry to become the best-performing post-pandemic family movie with a $21.3-million 3-day opening, and projected $26.5 million over four days.

Both films are performing well above our model’s predictions, which is an encouraging sign that audiences are returning to theaters. More...

Weekend predictions: Dream Horse unlikely to trouble the top six

With Memorial Day weekend looming over the market, along with its two big new films, Cruella and A Quiet Place: Part II, this will be a quiet weekend at the box office. In fact, to borrow a well-worn phrase, perhaps too quiet.

Dream Horse is the only new wide release this weekend, and (as we will see in a moment) it isn’t expected to do a huge amount of business. Spiral, last week’s number one, didn’t do spectacular business on opening weekend and should see a sharp decline. With everything else in the top ten either coming off a weak debut or pretty much played out, we could see one of the worst weekends in the past couple of months.

Tom and Jerry is enjoying the best weekend of 2021 so far, and the third-best of the pandemic era, according to Warner Bros.’ projections released on Sunday mornings. Weekend predictions: $6 million is the benchmark for Tom and Jerry

Warner Bros. wraps up January with what should be the biggest release of the year so far. Under normal circumstances, Tom and Jerry would be looking for an opening weekend somewhere close to the $58 million enjoyed by Sonic the Hedgehog this time last year. Our model says $46 million would be par for the course for a film like this. But, even though there are some signs of improvement in the theatrical market, pandemic-related restrictions and the reluctance of audiences to return to theaters means the movie won’t see anything close to that level of business this weekend.

Weekend estimates: Croods pulls clear of the pack

The Croods: A New Age will, as expected, finish top at the box office this weekend. In doing so, it becomes the first film in the 21st century to top the chart in its 13th weekend in release. The last film to achieve the feat was Titanic back in 1998. Titanic went on to win 15 weekends during its incredible first run. If A New Age surpassed that number, we’d have to look back to ET’s run in 1982 for something comparable. That film had 16 weekend wins spread through the second half of the year, including the weekend after Thanksgiving—its 26th in release.

Interesting as these stats may be to the connoisseur of box office records, Croods was down 18% from last weekend, which is a slight disappointment, although there is some potentially good news lurking when we look at the complete set of weekend estimates… More...

Today’s Super Bowl might be causing some caution among the studios as they compile their weekend projections, but whichever way you cut it, we’re looking at another slow weekend in theaters. The Little Things will come out on top with around $2.1 million, according to Warner Bros.. That’s down a steep 56% from its opening weekend, and 9% below our model’s prediction.
