Weekend projections: A Working Man wins at box office as Snow White tumbles

We weren’t expecting a great second weekend for Snow White, but its performance this weekend is shockingly poor for a family film, with Disney projecting a 66% decline from its already lackluster debut. A Working Man has, in comparison, had an excellent run through the weekend to grab a surprise top spot on the box office chart.

Despite a somewhat lackluster opening performance, Disney’s Snow White nevertheless dominated the domestic box office over the weekend, outpacing its nearest competitor by $38 million in box office receipts, to the tune of $42.21 million in its first three days. While the live-action film should stay on top of the fray, the competition will get tighter as a slew of oncomers will do their best to try to topple the reigning champ.

Snow White will perform somewhat better than our dire Friday-morning prediction, but is limping towards a $43-million opening, according to Disney’s Sunday-morning projection. The film is showing good legs, based on our model’s analysis, and the studio can point towards it having the second-best weekend of 2025 so far, but that’s slim pickings for a movie that could easily have earned double this amount.

Newcomer Novocaine knocked Mickey 17 off the number one spot at the domestic box office last weekend, earning $8.81 million in its three-day start. The film has since accrued another $2.6 million and currently enjoys a six-day total of $11.46 million. However, its place at the top will be short-lived as Disney’s Snow White is set to enchant 4,200 theaters this weekend.

Novocaine will top the box office chart this weekend with a modest $8.7 million, the lowest total for a number one movie since Argylle’s remarkable second-weekend win with just $6.25 million in February last year. Things at the box office aren’t quite as bad as they were then, but this will be the third straight weekend where the combined gross for all movies playing in theaters barely creeps over $50 million.

Novocaine goes into the weekend favorite to come out on top at the box office, according to our prediction model, but it has an unusual amount of competition, with Mickey 17 coming out of a chart-topping performance last weekend, and Black Bag also likely to have some cross-over appeal. Novocaine’s “Thursday” preview number ($1.75 million) is encouraging, but we don’t know how much came from previews last weekend, and it will be relying on solid momentum through the weekend and a lot of people choosing it over the other two films.

Theater counts: Mickey 17 fends off a swarm of newcomers to remain widest release

Last weekend’s box office was mostly as expected, with Mickey 17 debuting in the number one spot, earning a smidgen over $19 million in its three-day start. The film has since accrued another $5.5 million and currently enjoys a six-day total of $24.57 million. This week’s race is anyone’s game, as five new wide releases make their way into theaters, including Black Bag and Novocaine, both of which will give everything they have to claim that top spot.

Movie theater ticket prices rose 3% to $11.31 in 2024

North American ticket prices rose in line with inflation in 2024, hitting a new high of $11.31 for the year, up 3% from 2023’s average of $10.94. That follows gains of 4% in 2023 and 2022. The average price in Q4—typically the most expensive time of year to go see movies—hit a record high of $11.64. New data from our partners, along with SEC filings from the major theater chains, have also allowed us to revise and tighten our estimates for ticket prices since the beginning of 2022.

On August 30, 1972, in New York City, John Lennon played his only full-length show after leaving The Beatles, the One to One benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, a rollicking, dazzling performance from him and Yoko Ono. By 1971 the couple was newly arrived in the United States—living in a tiny apartment in Greenwich Village and watching a huge amount of American television. The film uses a riotous mélange of American TV to conjure the era through what the two would have been seeing on the screen: the Vietnam War, The Price is Right, Nixon, Coca-Cola ads, Cronkite, The Waltons. As they experience a year of love and transformation in the US, John and Yoko begin to change their approach to protest—ultimately leading to the One to One concert, which was inspired by a Geraldo Rivera exposé they watched on TV.

Warner Bros. is reporting a $19.1-million projected opening weekend for Mickey 17 this weekend, somewhat short of our Friday-morning prediction, and a disappointment for a movie that cost the studio $118 million. Captain America: Brave New World will cross the $175-million mark today and lands in second place in its fourth weekend. Anora rejoins the top 10 on the back of its Oscar triumph.
